Qix Wiki:Redirects

Redirects are a useful tool to help improve navigation and search result appearances. They are simple to set up, and should be created under several reasons:
Creating a redirect
Create the page you would like to be the redirect. Add #REDIRECT
followed by a link to the intended destination page. For example, Qix (NES) will have #REDIRECT [[Qix (Nintendo Entertainment System)]]
to go to Qix (Nintendo Entertainment System).
Reasons to make redirects
Here are common reasons to create redirects:
- Capitalization. By far the most common reason to make redirects, the search bar through the MediaWiki platform is case-sensitive, so many results may not appear. An example of when to use capitalization redirects would be Qix neo for Qix Neo. This is generally an "all or nothing" practice—a blend of capitalized terms and non-capitalized terms is generally not necessary or useful.
- Multiple names in use. The clearest example is how Volfied was released in some territories initially as Ultimate Qix. When this is the case, in conjunction with the naming policy, redirects should be made for other applicable names. This is also the case for abbreviations or regional names for consoles, such as NES and Nintendo Entertainment System as listed previously.
- Unusual punctuation. The two primary cases when this may be the case is when titles use specific punctuation. The first is smart punctuation, which is a specific register of stylized apostrophes, quotation marks, and ellipsis. These should be redirects, and pages utilize standard punctuation marks. The second is the use of hyphens and dashes. Primarily, pages should use hyphens (-) or mdashes (—). Redirects should be made not using any hyphens or dashes, but only if a page uses a dash should a hyphen redirect be made.
Reasons to not make redirects
Here are some reasons redirects may not be made:
- A disambiguation works better. Sometimes a term is too broad or applicable to be a redirect. An example is Qix, which could refer to the enemy, game, this wiki, or the Qix series. Because of this, a disambiguation is better.
- The redirect is in a namespace that isn't useful to redirect for. Examples include any talk pages, files, categories, and templates. These almost never have reasons to redirect users, as it is more straightforward to just link directly to using them. It may also cause issues with pages like categories, where content will not be appropriately categorized.
